The much-anticipated 24th edition of the Over-40 “Battle of Brothers” between Old Isipathana Masters and Old Thurstan Masters was played at the Army Ground, Mattegoda on 1 March 2025. However, persistent rain showers forced the match to be abandoned, resulting in a no-decision. The encounter had already been reduced to 30 overs per side due to overnight rain and a delayed start.
Batting first under the captaincy of Rohan Silva, Old Isipathana Masters got off to a solid start. Openers Vidura Algama and Panduka Kumaranayake shared a steady 43-run partnership for the first wicket. Following the dismissal of Kumaranayake for 11, the team struggled at times, slipping to 5 down for 86 runs.
Notable contributions came from Vidura Algama, who scored 35 runs (4×4 in 51 balls), and Mohamed Minhaj, who struck a brisk 27 runs (4×1, 6×1 in 24 balls). Nuwan Hettiarachchi added 12 runs to the total. The Isipathana Masters completed their 30 overs at 140/9.
Bowling honours for Thurstan Masters were shared by Vasantha Warnasuriya and Kanishka Weerasundera, each claiming three wickets, while Nuwan Kiriwendala picked up two.
Chasing 141, the Thurstan Masters lost early wickets and were reduced to 3 down for 47 runs. Asanka Withanage contributed 14 runs to keep the innings moving.
Stabilising the innings, Kanchana Perera played a stellar anchor role, remaining unbeaten on 32 (4×5 in 24 balls), while Chamith Aravinda also contributed 28* (4×2 in 26 balls). Together, they stitched a 55-run partnership for the 4th wicket, keeping their team in contention.
