Botheju appointed Isipathana head coach

🔊

Isipathana College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dhanushka Botheju as the head coach of the college rugby outfit for the 2024/2025 season. A former Isipathana player himself, Botheju brings a wealth of experience and a deep connection to the green jersey that makes this appointment a fitting one.

A proven track record

Botheju is no stranger to the big stage. During his playing days, he represented Isipathana College before going on to establish himself as a formidable prop forward at CR and FC and at national level with Sri Lanka. His transition into coaching has been equally impressive, with stints at some of the most respected rugby schools in the country, including S. Thomas’ College, St. Joseph’s College, Zahira College, and D.S. Senanayake College.

Last season, he served alongside Saliya Kumara as the forwards coach for the Greens, giving him valuable insight into the current squad and its potential.

At club level, Botheju has coached Havelock SC, CH and FC, Police SC, and CR and FC, primarily handling the forwards pack. He holds a World Rugby Level 2 coaching qualification, adding professional credentials to his hands-on experience.

A strong coaching partnership

Joining Botheju in the coaching setup is Chanaka Chandimal, who takes on the role of backs coach. Chandimal brings his own rich rugby pedigree, having represented Vidyartha College, Havelock SC, CR and FC, and the Sri Lions during his playing career. Together, the pair form a well-rounded coaching team with expertise across both the forward pack and the backline.

The season ahead

The targets for the upcoming season are clear. The Greens will look to defend the President’s Trophy Knockout title that they claimed so memorably last year. Beyond that, the focus will be on going one step further in the league. After finishing as runners-up last season, the hunger to claim that top spot will drive every training session and every match.

With a proven coach at the helm and a talented squad eager to build on last season’s success, the Isipathana rugby family has every reason to look forward to an exciting season ahead.
