In a significant move for the rugby community, Minister of Sports, Youth Affairs, Lands, and Tourism, Harin Fernando, has secured Cabinet approval to hand over Henry Pedris Grounds in Havelock Town to Isipathana College.
This historic decision allows Isipathana College to use the grounds for practices and host home matches starting from next year. Henry Pedris Stadium holds a storied past in rugby, having hosted notable matches in the late 1980s. Isipathana College displayed their prowess here
with memorable victories, including a decisive 15-0 win against Trinity College in-1988. while losing to Royal College 9-24 However, the ground fell silent for rugby since 1989, when it was used as a detention camp during civil unrest.
“This initiative by Minister Harin Fernando is truly commendable,” expressed an Isipathana rugby alumnus and expert. “It fulfills a long-standing dream of Isipathana students, alumni, and supporters to have our own rugby ground. We’ve advocated for this for decades, and Minister Fernando’s leadership has made it a reality. We are grateful for his dedication and perseverance.”The return of Henry Pedris Grounds marks a crucial milestone for Isipathana College rugby, providing a dedicated venue after years of playing solely soccer matches.
