Isipathana College is one of Sri Lanka’s most respected national schools for boys, known for strong academics, vibrant co-curricular life, and legendary sporting achievements. The school’s journey from a modest beginning to one of the island’s premier institutions reflects its motto: “Strive With Determination.”
Isipathana College was founded in January 1952 to accommodate the overflow of students from the Royal Preparatory School. It began in a coconut grove in Havelock Town on Greenlands Road, amidst about seven acres of lush greenery.
The school’s original name was Greenlands College, named after the road where it was located. In 1961, after the road was renamed Isipathana Mawatha (after the nearby Isipathanaramaya Temple), the school was officially renamed Isipathana Maha Vidyalaya — a name that later became simply Isipathana College.

Mr. B. A. Kuruppu, founder of Isipathana College
The first principal of the school was Mr. B. A. Kuruppu, who led the college from 1 January 1952 to 11 October 1959. He established the early academic programs and traditions of the school. Mr. Kuruppu, with the help of artists, also designed the college crest—featuring a lighted lamp and open book, symbolizing knowledge and enlightenment, along with the school motto “Strive With Determination.” The school colours of dark and light green were retained from the original name Greenlands College.
From its inception, the college grew rapidly:
The first sports meet was held in March 1953, and the first prize-giving ceremony followed in 1954.
The first college magazine was published in 1954.
In 1956, a Vihara Mandiraya and Chaitya were built to commemorate the Buddha Jayanthi Year.
In 1962, the college was split into junior and upper divisions, each with its own principal; this structure was later recombined in 1975, and fully reunited under one principal in 1999.

The college has consistently maintained strong academic standards, offering students a comprehensive curriculum that prepares them for both local and international examinations. With dedicated teachers and modern facilities, Isipathana College ensures that students develop critical thinking skills, creativity, and a lifelong love for learning.
Isipathana College is particularly famous for its rugby tradition, producing many national-level players and champions in inter-school competitions. Its sports program extends beyond rugby to athletics, cricket, basketball, and more, emphasizing teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. The school’s motto, “Discipline, Character, Knowledge”, is evident both on the sports field and in the classroom.
Beyond academics and sports, Isipathana College encourages students to participate in debates, drama, music, and social service initiatives. This well-rounded approach helps students discover their passions, build leadership skills, and contribute positively to society.
With a legacy spanning over 70 years, Isipathana College has shaped countless leaders in Sri Lanka’s academic, professional, and sporting spheres. Its alumni network continues to play an active role in supporting the school and inspiring the next generation of students.
Whether it’s on the rugby field, in the classroom, or through cultural achievements, Isipathana College remains a symbol of excellence, resilience, and national pride.
