With a clear focus on strengthening its legacy as the “Kings of Sri Lankan School Rugby,” Isipathana College has officially announced the appointment of internationally renowned rugby figure Saimoni Rokini as the College’s Rugby Consultant. This strategic appointment comes at a crucial stage, as Isipathana prepares for the upcoming Schools Rugby season with the aim of further enhancing the competitive edge of the famed Green Army.
A Fijian international with vast experience at the highest levels of the game, Rokini brings invaluable insight, speed, and tactical knowledge to the Isipathana rugby programme. Well known within Sri Lankan rugby circles, he is expected to add international depth and structure to the College’s already dynamic playing philosophy.
Rokini enjoyed a distinguished playing career, recognised for his blistering pace, physical power, and versatility across the backline. Primarily a centre three-quarter, he was equally effective as a fullback or wing when required. Born and raised in Fiji, he proudly represented his nation in both the XV-a-side and Sevens formats. He played a key role in Fiji’s Cup victories at the prestigious Hong Kong Sevens in 1998 and 1999 and later captained the Fijian Sevens team at the 2004 Hong Kong Sevens, where his leadership and game management stood out on the global stage. He also represented Fiji at the 2003 Rugby World Cup, competing alongside some of the most celebrated names in Fijian rugby. Rokini is also a cousin of world-renowned Fijian rugby legend and Sevens coach Waisale Serevi.
Following his playing career, Rokini transitioned seamlessly into coaching and mentorship roles. His approach to rugby places strong emphasis not only on physical conditioning and technical skills, but also on mental toughness, discipline, and tactical awareness. In his role as Rugby Consultant, Rokini will work closely with Head Coach Sanath Matis, Backs Coach Chanaka Chandimal, and the wider support staff. His responsibilities will include match analysis, strategic planning, and mentoring senior players to ensure consistent high-level performances throughout the season.
Isipathana College has long been recognised for its proud rugby tradition, attacking style of play, and passionate supporter base. In recent years, the standard of school rugby in Sri Lanka has risen significantly, with intense competition from traditional rivals. In response, the College has taken proactive steps to integrate international expertise into its rugby structure, reinforcing its commitment to excellence.
The appointment of Saimoni Rokini reflects Isipathana College’s determination not only to compete, but to lead from the front and uphold its rich rugby heritage. As the new season approaches, the Isipathana Rugby fraternity looks forward with confidence and anticipation, hopeful that this strategic addition will translate into strong performances and silverware. All eyes will be on the Shaakib Zumri-led Isipathana side as the Green Machine prepares to make its mark once again.
