Isipathana College’s Under-14 rugby team produced an outstanding performance at the SLSRFA Elite Under-14 Ten-a-Side Rugby Championship, finishing runners-up after a thrilling 19–17 defeat to Trinity College in the Cup final.
The tournament, held at the Trinity Rugby Stadium in Pallekele, brought together some of the leading school rugby teams in the country, with Isipathana showing excellent determination and character throughout the competition.
The Green Machine started the final in impressive fashion, taking control of the game and building a commanding 17–0 lead by halftime. Their attacking rugby, defensive discipline and commitment gave Isipathana a strong advantage against the home side.
However, Trinity fought back strongly after the break. The hosts gradually reduced the deficit and eventually turned the match around, securing a narrow 19–17 victory and the Under-14 Ten-a-Side championship.
Despite the result, the Isipathana youngsters can be extremely proud of their performance. Reaching the Cup final against strong opposition and leading by 17 points demonstrates the quality, determination and potential within the young Isipathana rugby programme.
The result also highlights the importance of continuing to develop these young players, who have shown that they have the ability to compete at the highest level of school rugby.
A narrow defeat, but a performance full of promise.
Congratulations to the Isipathana College Under-14 rugby team, coaching staff, teachers, parents and everyone who supported the young Green Machine throughout the tournament .
