Harin Fernando, Hon. Minister of Telecommunication & Digital Infrastructure, has generously donated Rs. 5.1 million to Isipathana College Rugby, proceeds from the auction of an All Blacks 2015 Rugby World Cup jersey. The jersey, gifted to the minister by New Zealand Rugby during discussions on a prospective partnership, could have been a prized keepsake—but instead, the minister chose to support Sri Lanka’s rugby powerhouse.
Isipathana College, renowned for producing national players, has enjoyed remarkable success in recent years: winning the Triple Crown in 2014, finishing as runners-up in all major tournaments in 2015, and claiming both the Singer League and Milo President’s Trophy in 2016, while also finishing second in the All Island 7s tournament.
A special ceremony was held at the Isipathana Grounds today, attended by the Principal, Rugby Committee, students, and notable guests including Kushan Indunil (Captain, 2016 Champions), Asanga Senevirathne (SLRFU President), former referee Dilroy Fernando, and Harsha Guneratne (Director, Hela Clothing).
Speaking at the event, Minister Fernando praised Isipathana’s contribution to keeping rugby alive in Sri Lanka and urged students to strive for excellence both in sports and academics, highlighting the importance of balancing the two.
